Book & Author
Old friends make the improbable decision to hike the 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail, and that’s when the fun begins.
Bill Bryson was born in the American Midwest, and now lives in the UK.
Bill Bryson’s bestselling travel books include The Lost Continent andNotes from a Small Island, which in a national poll was voted the book that best represents Britain. Another travel book, A Walk in the Woods, has become a major film starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson. His new number one Sunday Times bestseller is The Road to Little Dribbling: More Notes from a Small Island.
In this interview with Radio National of Australia, Bryson talks about what it was like to have A Walk in the Woods made into a movie and how it compares to his real walk on the trail.
Quote from the book
What on earth would I do if four bears came into my camp? Why, I would die of course. Literally shit myself lifeless.
- Bryson and Katz are such an “odd couple”. What holds their friendship together? Are they good for each other?
- How does the walk in the woods act as a journey of self awareness for Bryson?
- Did any of the group members find any of the humor in the book offensive?
A Walk in the Woods was made into a move starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte in 2015. Your group may want to plan a movie night and then compare the move and the book, or watch clips from the movie and compare them to scenes from the book at your meeting.
The Walk in the Woods movie soundtrack could provide some nice background music at your meeting.
Here are some ideas for refreshments that you could serve at your meeting: trail mix (for obvious reasons), snickers bars, and cream soda – the later two in honor of Katz.
What would you like to tell other book group members about A Walk in the Woods?
